Target Audience Research: Trailer Reactions

In this clip, I had members of my target audience watch some contemporary horror film trailers, so that I could see their reactions. From this, I was able to directly see what they found effective in horror films. I also saw what made them laugh, which is the unrequited reaction, and I can use this in my trailer so that my trailer is reflective of the horror genre,

Target Audience Research: Fears

In this video, I asked members of my target audience what fears they had. With this information, I will be able to include key elements that my target audience will find scary, and therefore make my trailer successful in the genre of horror, as it will have elements that they find scary.

I created this word cloud, to summarise the most popular fears that my target audience displayed.

Todorov's Narrative Theory

Todorov's Narrative Theory can is split into five main sections:

1) A state of equilibrium - There is a sense of balance in the story
2) A disruption of the equilibrium - There is an inbalance in the story
3) A recognition of the disruption - The characters become aware of the change to their situation
4) An attempt to repair the disruption - The characters try to fix the unsettlement
5) A reinstatement of the equilibrium - A new sense of balance is instated within the narrative

Horror Villain Deconstruction - Norman Bates

Norman Bates - Psycho

Norman Bates is a character created by writer Robert Bloch, and portrayed by Anthony Perkins as the primary antagonist of the 1960 film, directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Bates suffered from an identity disorder and psychotic behaviour, believing that he was his controlling mother. At the same time he suffered from visual and auditory hallucinations, in which his mother apparently convinced him to commit violent acts. When the ‘Mother’ personality took over, Bates would transform into murderous rages, targeting women who aroused him.

Bates manifests the fact that horror in the 1960s followed themes that were more psychological and had ‘slasher’ elements, as his character is based around the development of the understanding of the psyche, and how it affects audiences. Also, from technological advancements horror moved from being gothic, in the 1950’s, to following more contemporary concerns, making the scenes from Psycho seem more likely to happen, and therefore more frightening to audiences.

When the film, with the character was released in 1960, common gothic motifs for horror included violence, fears of the devil and the role of the female threat. The character of Bates embodies these motifs as he had violent outbursts which resulted in him murdering women, as he saw them as a threat, which stems from his mothers manipulative and controlling nature. The motif of ‘fears of the devil’ is shown through his belief that sexuality is a sin.
